Trenton Housing Authority and Conifer Realty Unveils Turner Pointe Community

The Trenton Housing Authority (THA) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to celebrate the completion of Turner Pointe, a new affordable family rental community located in North Trenton, NJ. The first residents to occupy apartment homes in Turner Pointe are expected to move in around November 1.

“We are pleased to be part of the redevelopment of the North Trenton Battle Monument Neighborhood with this project and others still to come,” said Jelani Garrett, Executive Director of the THA. “The Trenton Housing Authority is dedicated to building and maintaining safe, affordable, energy-efficient housing for Trenton residents. Working with Conifer Realty LLC, we are able to provide residents with, not just affordable housing, but hope and promise for the future of Trenton.”

Turner Pointe is a joint venture between The Trenton Housing Authority and Conifer Realty, LLC. Turner Pointe represents the redevelopment of the former George W. Page Home complex, which was built in 1954 and had been vacant and non-performing for several years. The redevelopment plan included the demolition of the old buildings and the new construction of 77 townhome-style apartments that include modern amenities with energy-efficient appliances. The THA Board of Commissioners selected the name Turner Pointe in honor of Senator Shirley K. Turner, the first woman and first African American to be elected as Senate President Pro Tempore.

“We at Conifer Realty appreciate the opportunity to actively participate in the transformation of downtown Trenton by developing Turner Pointe into a beautiful new community,” said Joan F. Hoover, President of Conifer Realty, LLC. “This community is yet another shining example of our success in utilizing public-private partnerships and employing creative approaches to the design, construction, financing, and management of affordable housing.”

Each apartment home includes a full kitchen with energy-star-rated appliances, living and dining area, full bath, generous bedrooms, and ample closet and cabinet space. The entire community utilizes energy-efficient heating and cooling systems that meet the Energy Star Program and Enterprise Green Requirements. Residents will enjoy amenities including a smart-card laundry center, fitness room, and community room.

“There is nothing more important to uplift a person’s spirit and life than quality, safe, and affordable housing,” said Senator Shirley Turner. “I want to congratulate the Trenton Housing Authority and Conifer Realty, LLC, on their progressive leadership in providing this life-changing opportunity for our residents in the City of Trenton.  I am deeply humbled to play even a small role in creating a neighborhood that has the potential to improve the quality of life of the people who live here.”

“HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration program is by far the most effective way to preserve affordable housing, leveraging public and private funding to benefit residents for years to come,” said Lynne Patton, HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey. “HUD’s RAD program also guarantees HUD rental subsidies, so that Turner Point residents can rely on the financial stability that Section 8 vouchers provide.”

“Trenton resilience is on full display at Turner Pointe as a once-vacant and blighted property is transformed into an affordable, safe, and energy-efficient community for 77 North Trenton families,” said Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora. “Partnerships like this one between the City of Trenton, the Trenton Housing Authority and Conifer Realty are key to lifting our city up, improving our residents’ quality of life, and restoring pride in our neighborhoods.”

Applications are still being accepted for Turner Pointe apartment units. For more information, visit tha-nj.org or call 609-278-5000.
