PROGRAM AIMS TO PREVENT, CONTROL AND REDUCE VIOLENT CRIME, DRUG ABUSE, AND GANG ACTIVITY IN DESIGNATED HIGH-CRIME NEIGHBORHOODS.

What is Weed & Seed?

Weed and Seed is a Program of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Community Capacity Development Office www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ccso/ws.  Its strategy is a two-pronged approach designed to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity in areas deemed as high-crime neighborhoods.  In short:

  1. Law enforcement agencies "weed out" violent criminals and drug activity.
  2. Community Residents, public agencies, community and faith-based organizations work together to "plant seeds" of hope, through initiatives such as human services, prevention, intervention, treatment and neighborhood restoration.

A community-oriented policing component bridges the weeding and seeding elements together.

Who Manages the Weed & Seed Strategy?

The City of Trenton Department of Recreation, Natural Resources & Culture is responsible for leading the seeding component of the strategy and serves as a resource for the community.  It is managed by former police detective, Mr. William McLaughlin, and his assistant, Ms. Jamilla Campbell.  The Trenton Police Department is responsible for the weeding side of the strategy.

History of Weed & Seed
