Trenton Housing Authority and City of Trenton to hold September Press Conference on Project

August 11, 2011 - TRENTON, NJ – This week, the Trenton Housing Authority (THA) began demolition of the high rise towers on the site of the former Miller Homes development. Earlier in June, THA started demolishing the vacant townhomes on the site. The demolition and redevelopment of the Miller Homes site was made possible by $22 million HOPE VI grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. THA and the City of Trenton will hold a press conference, in early September, to discuss progress of the Miller Homes redevelopment.

“We are dedicated to providing safe and affordable housing that residents are proud to call home. This project represents a fresh start for Miller Home residents and the city as a whole,” said Herbert Brown, Executive Director.

“It is truly great to see all of the diligent planning and discussions materialize into what is going to be an incredible renaissance of Miller Homes and the surrounding neighborhood.  Once the project is complete, we will have vital development that the City of Trenton can be proud of,” stated Mayor Tony Mack.

The Trenton Housing Authority and Pennrose Properties, LLC partnered to build energy efficient, sustainable, and green housing according to LEED standards. The new townhouse and stacked flat units will include durable fixtures and amenities such as dishwashers, washer & dryer hook-ups, broadband connectivity and parking spaces.

In addition to redeveloping the Miller Homes site with new affordable housing, THA is also partnering with various Trenton institutions to provide Early Childhood Education and other social services to Miller Homes’ children and their families. The Trenton Housing Authority has developed a comprehensive Community and Supportive Services (CSS) program for Miller Home residents.

The THA selected Catholic Charities to coordinate the CSS effort and provide case management services. The THA collaborated with four early childhood education providers: Trenton Head Start, Trenton Public Schools, Child Care Connections and Children’s Futures to ensure all Miller Home children ages five years and under have access to quality early childhood education programs.
